Plant-forward means eating mostly plant-based foods. Many studies link a wide variety of benefits to choosing a plant-based lifestyle.
One study with 416,000 participants published by JAMA Internal Medicine in 2020 reported that choosing plant-based protein instead of animal-based protein appeared to reduce death risk by as much as 24% in men and 21% in women.
An evidence-based immunity review published in Science Direct in 2019 reported that chronic diseases cause more than 80% of deaths and shorten the healthy lifespan. This study showed that chronic inflammation leads to chronic diseases. A major focus of this course is to reduce inflammation to increase healthy years and cause overall feelings of being well and energized.
The American Gut Project with more than 10,000 participants found that people who eat more than 30 different types of plant foods each week have a more diverse gut microbiome (a healthy gut). The benefits of a healthy gut include improvements in metabolism, digestion, the ability to reach and maintain a healthy weight, a stronger immune system, more energy, a better mood, and a lower risk of obesity and other chronic diseases.
An evidence-based article published in Nutritional Neuroscience in 2023 concluded that high dietary fiber intake was protective against depression in adults. In fact, each 5-gram increase of fiber was associated with a 5% reduction in the risk of depression.
Another evidence-based study published in Frontiers of Psychiatry in 2021 found that participants eating more than 25.6 grams of fiber per day had a 33% lower risk of anxiety compared to participants eating less than 19 grams of fiber per day. In this same study, researchers found that women in the highest fiber group (eating 25.6 grams or more) also had the lowest risk of depression.
The CDC reports that 33% of American adults are not getting enough sleep. The National Institute of Health (NIH) links sleep deficiency to heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, obesity, stress, anxiety and depression. This course includes a focus on sleep hygiene, aligning with the body's internal 24-hour clock, and stress management.
As seen in the 2024 Netflix documentary, You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment, conducted by researchers at Stanford University, numerous benefits come with eating a plant-based diet.
